What are you wanting from BJJ?

Let’s be clear from the start this blog isn’t for the people who come to class just to move, laugh, and catch up with friends. That’s totally fine Jiu-Jitsu can absolutely be a hobby, a great way to stay fit, meet good people, and have fun.

But this post isn’t for that.

This is for the people who say they want to take their training seriously the ones who want to level up, push themselves, and find out what they’re really capable of on the mat.

However if you’re doing one or two classes a week, then chatting during warm up, cruising through rolls and treating it like a social meet up and you are “serious” about your improvement, you’re not going to improve as much as you think you are. Showing up without intent is just motion. Progress comes from purpose.

Purpose? But im down all the time.

Lifting a 10kg kettlebell once a week, or doing the same warm-up drill with no fire or urgency, that only gets you so far. You’ll build a little strength, a little fitness. But in reality, your biggest gains come when you roll with intent. You’re down on points and you tell yourself to fight back. You get stuck in bottom and you refuse to stay there. You push for that submission when most are happy with maintaining position till the end and resting. That’s where improvement happens. That’s where ability turns into your will to win.

We talk about it in class, it’s 80% mental, 20% physical. Your muscles can only carry you so far. Your greatest motivators aren’t the stripes on your belt, the next rank, or even the medal in your hand. They’re the voice in your head that says, I will do better. I will train harder. I will win. Self-competition, asking yourself every class, Did I push harder than I did last time?

Marcelo Garcia, said: “Everyone is the same for the first two minutes… after that you start to separate physically and mentally.” “Those that win are the ones that train like champions, day in day out in the gym.”

He means if you’re not mentally switched-on, you lose. Your technique, your fitness they do matter (not matter what the myth tellers of BJJ say. Strength plays a part) But your mindset? That’s the multiplier.

Think of it this way, when you train like a champion day in, day out, then when the competition (or that hard roll) comes it feels easier. The training becomes harder than the fight. They take training seriously. So you win more often not because you’re stronger, but because you’re prepared and mentally ready for the onslaught that is the first 2 minutes. The fire in your training becomes the kick up the ass you need when the fight gets tough. That way you dont always need your coach behind you yelling UP UP UP UP. You can yell to yourself UP UP UP UP.

Make your gym training so hard that the competition actually feels like a break, then you will get the rewards…

Here’s your simple challenge for the next week:
  • Attend class with intent, no sitting and talking when there is free rolls. Warm up with focus. Drill with speed and precision.
  • In rolls IMPOSE YOUR GAME. If you’re on bottom, fight to escape. If you’re ahead, stay ahead. Hunt for submissions, don’t just coast.
  • Track one metric, maybe it’s do all 6 6minute rounds, maybe it’s three sweeps per roll, maybe it’s refuse leglock attempts from bottom and fight to control hands, when Ro…Someone is trying to get your foot. Write it down, track it, hold yourself accountable.
  • Reflect after class, Did I train harder than last week? Did I leave anything in the tank?

Remember the belt did not make you. The training makes you. The fight in your head makes you.

Stop worrying about the “next rank”. Stop hoping for the stripe. Start owning the nowsession. Show up. Train like you mean it. Give every minute on the mat your effort, your mind, and your rolls your will not to lose, take training seriously.

Because when you train like that, the results will show. Your body will improve. Your technique will sharpen. Your mindset will harden. You’ll walk into rolls feeling like the hammer, not the nail.
