Maurício Gomes, The Godfather of British Jiu-Jitsu
There are teachers, and then there are legacies. Mauricio Motta Gomes “The White Bear” is one of those rare figures whose footprint in the sport is measured not only in medals and belts, but in whole generations of fighters who learned how to move, compete, and teach because he showed them how.
Mauricio began training before most of us were born, studying under João Alberto Barreto from the age of four and later becoming one of the small, elite group personally promoted to black belt by the legendary Rolls Gracie. That connection to Rolls is more than pedigree, it’s the technical and philosophical backbone that runs through everything Mauricio has taught. Today he wears the white and red coral belt of an 8th degree master, a living bridge between the old guard of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and its modern global spread.
Bringing BJJ to the UK (and planting the seeds)
In the late 1990s Mauricio made a pivotal move he crossed over to bring Gracie Barra and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to British soil. He set up Gracie Barra in the UK with teaching activity across Birmingham, London, Edinburgh and Belfast (setting up our club in the process) and was instrumental in building the infrastructure and coaching culture that allowed BJJ to take root and grow across the country.
Gracie Barra Birmingham, which Mauricio started and later handed over to instructors such as Braulio Estima, became one of the first hubs of serious BJJ training in the UK. For his work seeding clubs, instructors, and students, many in Britain affectionately call him the “Godfather of British Jiu-Jitsu.”
Competitor, coach and teacher.
Mauricio’s competitive career dates back to the 1970s and ’80s, including notable wins such as the Rio de Janeiro State absolute division in 1981, success that came under the watch of Rolls Gracie. Beyond competition, Mauricio has been a sought after teacher around the world, he opened a Gracie Barra school in Tokyo in the late 1990s (one of the first Brazilians invited to teach in Japan), spent years developing talent across Europe, and even helped establish Gracie Barra schools further afield.
Father, mentor, and architect of champions
One of Mauricio’s most visible legacies is his family and student lineage. He played a leading role in the early development of his son, Roger Gracie, who went on to become one of the most decorated competitors in BJJ history, and he brought elite instructors like Braulio Estima and Felipe Souza to the UK to teach and raise the level of training. Maurício didn’t just hand out belts; he created training environments where talent could be sharpened into world-class skill. (Mauricio Gomes BJJ)
Still competing and still teaching.
Even after decades on the mat, Mauricio’s story didn’t end in the 1990s. He made headlines with a competitive return at the IBJJF World Master events, stepping back onto the competition mat in later years, a reminder that the technical and physical life of BJJ can be lifelong. More importantly, he still teaches and shares the lineage and lessons he carries from Rolls and the Gracie family.
Why the “Godfather” title fits.
It’s one thing to win championships. It’s another to move country, plant clubs, bring teachers, create students who become teachers, and thereby change the map of a sport. Between his Rolls Gracie lineage, the first Gracie Barra outlets in the UK, the champions and coaches who learned under him, and the culture he helped establish, Maurício’s fingerprints are on the very existence of modern British BJJ, and that’s why many call him the godfather.
A final thought (with a touch of Lycan honesty)
Belts and titles are important, they mark progress and give structure. But the real work is the hours on the mat, the drilling that no one sees, the teaching you pass forward. Mauricio’s coral belt is a symbol of that lifetime, his true legacy is the people and systems he built.
And if you want it in Lycan style: don’t get caught up in the belts you didn’t even know existed before you started. The belt is the dye; the training is what stains you for life.
A massive thank you to all who came and took part in the amazing seminar with Master Mauricio Gomes.
