Why Women’s Self-Defence Matters — And Why You Deserve to Feel Safe
At Lycan Grappling Academy, we meet so many women who tell us the same thing: they just want to feel safer, more confident, and more in control of their own space.
And that feeling is completely understandable.
In Northern Ireland, the reality is that many women experience behaviours that make them feel uncomfortable, uneasy, or unsafe. A major 2023 study by Ulster University found that 98% of women here had experienced at least one form of violence, harassment or abuse in their lifetime — with seven out of ten experiencing something in the past year alone.
These aren’t just statistics. They reflect the everyday experiences of sisters, daughters, friends, colleagues — the women we care about.
But while the problem is real, so is women’s strength. And that’s where self-defence can play a gentle but empowering role.
Self-Defence Is Not About Fear — It’s About Confidence
Our Women’s Only Self-Defence Course isn’t designed to make you feel afraid. Quite the opposite — it’s designed to help you feel:
- More confident walking through the world
- More aware of your surroundings
- More capable of handling uncomfortable situations
- More connected to other supportive women
We don’t teach aggression. We teach calm, simple, effective skills that help you feel grounded and in control.
You don’t need to be fit, strong, or flexible. You don’t need any martial arts experience. And you certainly don’t need to arrive feeling confident.
That part grows naturally — and gently — over time.
A Warm, Supportive Space for Women
One of the things we are most proud of at Lycan is the environment we create.
Women tell us that when they walk into our academy, they feel:
- Welcomed
- Supported
- Respected
- Encouraged
There is no pressure, no judgement, and no expectation. Just friendly coaches, practical skills, and a group of women all learning together, at their own pace.
Many women join thinking, “I’m not sure this is for me.” By week two, they’re laughing, learning, and wondering why they ever doubted themselves.
Why Self-Defence Helps — Even Beyond the Techniques
Self-defence is about far more than blocking or escaping. It helps with:
- Setting boundaries
- Reading situations earlier
- Feeling more in control of your body
- Trusting your own instincts
- Carrying yourself with confidence in daily life
For many women, these benefits matter just as much as the physical techniques — sometimes even more.
